ISM Program Helps

"I am a mother of a child who took part in the In School Mentoring Program. My son was in grade four at the time and had no male influence in his life. He has a sister and we have no other family members in Canada. I was really worried about him until I heard about the In School Mentoring Program.

He was matched with [his Big Brother] who was at the time at Trinity University. [The Big] was just like [my son], in that he loved sports. He was the 'all star' player at Trinity in volleyball. [My son] loved him straight away. He had found someone who wasn't his mother to talk to about 'boy stuff.' [My son] couldn't wait till [his Big] would arrive at school to spend time with him. He felt so special being taken out of class to have one-on-one time with [his Big].

They spent one school year together. They had so much fun together that [the Big Brother] asked if he could start seeing [my son] out of school to become his out of school match (Community Mentoring Program). They have been matched together now for three and a half years. Having [the Big] around has been a huge support to [my son].

The In School Mentoring Program helped [my son] in ways that I, as a single mother, would never have been able to do. [The Big Brother] has been a positive male role model whom [my son] wants to grow up to become like.

Yours truly, Michelle"
